About Blown Bitumen 115/15:
The air is passed through Bitumen penetration 60/70 to produce Oxidized bitumen grades like Blown Bitumen 115/15. As a result, bitumen has a rubbery texture. In addition, the bitumen is harder. Bitumen hardened under controlled temperature conditions. It is widely used in the piling industry for anti-slip layer compound, roofing felts, roofing and waterproofing industries, sound dampening felts and under carriage sealants in the automotive industry, electric cable joint protection, joint filling compound, sealant compound, and more. In addition, we use it for sealing joint cuts.
As well as being used in oil & gas pipeline joints, we also use it in manufacturing bituminous marine mastic. In addition to being completely waterproof, oxidized bitumen also has a very flexible and chemically stable composition. The material is highly flexible and durable. Moreover, its chemical stability is excellent. The last notable advantage of Oxidized Bitumen is that it can be used in a very wide variety of applications due to its exceptional technical properties.
Application of blown bitumen 115/15
- It is a widely used anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry, used for the manufacture of roofing felts, for sound dampening felts, as an undercarriage sealant in the automobile industry, joint filling compound, and as a sealant compound.
- Bitumen 115/15 is widely used in the piling industry, for roofing felts, sound dampening materials, and under carriage sealants in the automobile industry, as an anti-slip layer compound, for joint filling compounds, and as a sealant compound.
- It is used as a raw material in bitumen coating, roofing, insulation, as well as isolation bitumen membrane sheets.
- The bitumen can also be used in the manufacture of chemicals, fuels, paints, lacquers, varnishes, paper, pulp, and textiles.
- Construction includes road construction, pavement repair, crack sealing, civil works, and roofing. Additionally, it can be used for sealing and insulating buildings, adhesive, construction materials additive, dust-binding, and coating. In rubber and plastic products, it is used as an insulating and impregnating agent.
- Paving and roofing products are made from bitumen 115/15. Additionally, it is used in lining public works structures as well as in asphalt-based paints that protect metals from corrosion and adhesives in electrical laminates.
- It is also commonly used for asphalt roofing, pipe coatings, Portland cement pavements, hydraulic applications, and paint manufacturing. Additionally, it protects metals from corrosion in asphalt-based paints. Also used for lining public works structures, adhesives, electrical laminates, and as a base for synthetic turf.
- Blown Asphalt 115/15 is typically used in roofing, pipe coating, Portland cement pavement, hydraulic applications, and paint manufacturing.
Technical Advantages of Blown Asphalt 115/15
- Durability
- Flexibility
- Water Resistant
- Chemical Stability
Compared to paving grade bitumen:
- Reduced temperature susceptibility
- Exhibits a more ‘solid’ nature at ambient temperatures
- High penetration index
Advantages of oxidized or blown bitumen 115/15
- It is long lasting
- It is not easily damaged by water
- This bitumen has a suitable flexibility which prevents the pavement cracking
- It has a good resistance to change in a chemical reaction
Storage & Handling
Almost all final uses require the packaging of bitumen to be heated. Material packaged in containers is usually heated and melted in boilers on site. t is critical to maintain quality and control the heating process in order to maintain health and safety. There is a maximum safe handling temperature of 230°C, and this should not be exceeded. It is of utmost importance to control the heating phase of the bitumen since it is not a good conductor of heat.
Bitumen that has been oxidized should be shredded before being included in the boiler. As a result, a larger surface area is exposed to the heat and a more even heating process is achieved. The large exposed surface area of the boiler reduces the risk of localized overheating, altering the characteristics of modified bitumen, and potentially causing thermal cracking, resulting in low lash vapors. This low flash vapor volume determines the fire risk and thus the flash point of the oxidized bitumen becomes irrelevant.
Melted bitumen should not be reheated from cold in the boiler, as this will likely cause localized overheating (absence of convection means poor heat transfer) and may lead to the formation of a low flash point. Monitor or control devices for temperature should be placed in a logical location. Due to the poor thermal conductivity of the bitumen, a thermometer in the bitumen far from the heat source could read significantly different (by hundreds of degrees) from the true temperature of the bitumen.
